Pole Mountain Trails Assessment

Common Outdoor Ground is coordinating a trail assessment day on Pole Mountain, to gather information on "non-system" trails in the area. Non-system trails are not maintained or designated by the Forest Service, but may exist on the landscape for many reasons, such as use by livestock and wild game, old road beds, or user-created routes pioneered by recreationists.

Volunteers will be asked to hike, bike, or ride non-system trails and utilize GPS units (provided by the University of Wyoming Ruckleshaus Institute) to gather information on those trails. That information will be utilized to help inform future Forest Service management of the trails in question.

The trails assessment is part of the Pole Mountain Gateways project, which will determine long-term management of non-motorized recreation on Pole Mountain.

Participants at COG's July 19 event will need to have knowledge of non-system trails south of Wyoming Highway 210 (Happy Jack Road). Specific locations for desired mapping will be established at event check-in. A separate event on July 11 will focus on trails north of Happy Jack Rd.

All registered participants will receive an email prior to the event to sign up for one of two GPS unit/orientation pick-up timeslots: 8-9 a.m. or 9-10 a.m. Each pick up/orientation will be limited to 10 individuals, and all volunteers will be asked to wear a mask during check-in.

Check-in on July 19 will be at the Vedauwoo fee both.
