The Solitude Project

The Solitude Project was started in Summer 2019 by Common Outdoor Ground to provide solitude scores for the Encampment River and Huston Park wilderness areas to the Forest Service. Solitude is one of five wilderness characters measured by the Forest Service. Currently, no solitude score exists for either of these wilderness areas. Common Outdoor Ground is seeking users of these areas to record solitude to create these scores. Creating solitude scores will result in the Forest Service being able to allocate more resources to these wilderness areas, such as cutting downed trees and maintaining trails, trailheads and parking lots.

How can you help: The goal of the project is to determine how many other people you’re apt to see in a given area. When you visit the Encampment River/Huston Park wilderness for hiking, horse riding, fishing, hunting, camping, etc., let us know and fill out a brief survey about how many people you ran into!

The project, which is part of a broader initiative to help preserve the tranquil nature of wilderness areas, will be ongoing throughout the rest of the season.
